What is MOV?
MOV is a common file extension, especially when working with Quicktime,
which Apple owns and developed the MOV file to go with it, according to
File Info. A lot of digital cameras record video in QuickTime support.
QuickTime is an extensible multimedia framework developed by Apple Inc.,
capable of handling various formats of digital video, picture, sound, panoramic
images, and interactivity. Using a Quicktime player that either comes with
a Web browser or can be downloaded from Apple or the browser company, you
can view and control brief multimedia sequences. The multimedia container
files store audio, video, text and more for specific use with the Mac operating
system. MOV files are used by Apple Quicktime player, which is a specific
video player for Apple. So, if you have a video on an IPOD type device
that ends in ".mov", or if you have such a file on your computer,
it may not be compatible with other types of players, especially simpler
ones. In order to use a MOV file in a player that needs a more compatible
format such as MPEG, you must do a conversion. As a multimedia stardand,
QuickTime is not purely linear. It could contain interactivity and causes
problems when converting to other video formats. Files that use the MOV
file extension are created by QuickTime, Apple's media software. If you're
emailing a clip or simply need more storage space, set the preferences
for files that use the MOV extension to make the most efficient use of
your storage space. It is a proprietary format, but playable on both Apple
and Windows-based computers. Apple provides a version of QuickTime for
free (and is automatically installed with the latest versions of iTunes)
that can easily handle the MOV video files.
What is GIF?
Graphics Interchange Format. GIFs are image files that are compressed to
reduce transfer time. The proper pronounciation of the acronym is a soft
"g" sound: like JIF. It can also use multiple images for animated
effects (animated GIFs), but has no sound. Since a single GIF image palette
is limited to 256 colors, it is not usually used as a format for digital
photography. Digital photographers use image file formats capable of reproducing
a greater range of colors, such as TIFF, RAW or JPEG. The vast majority
of GIF files contain 16-color or 256-color near-photographic quality images.
Gray-scale images, such as those produced by scanners, are also commonly
stored using GIF, although monochrome graphics, such as clip art and document
images, rarely are. Although the bulk of GIF files are found in the Intel-based
MS-DOS environment, GIF is not associated with any particular software
application. GIF also was not created for any particular software application
need, although most software applications that read and write graphical
image data, such as paint programs, scanner and video software, and most
image file display and conversion programs, usually support GIF. GIF was
instead intended to allow the easy interchange and viewing of image data
stored on local or remote computer systems. The GIF encoding process can
be modified to create a file without LZW compression that is still viewable
as a GIF image. This technique was introduced originally as a way to avoid
patent infringement. Uncompressed GIF can also be a useful intermediate
format for a graphics programmer because individual pixels are accessible
for reading or painting. An uncompressed GIF file can be converted to an
ordinary GIF file simply by passing it through an image editor.
